Dmitri Smerdyakov debuted in Amazing Spider-Man #1 (1963) as Spider-Man's very first costumed villain — predating the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and the Vulture. A Soviet spy and master of disguise, Chameleon's power is not physical but psychological: he assumes the identity of anyone he chooses, using masks, costumes, and later chemical treatments to replicate appearance and voice with enough precision to fool colleagues, law enforcement, and even close friends. His half-brother relationship with Kraven the Hunter ties him into one of Spider-Man's most significant villain dynasties, and his role in Kraven's Last Hunt — impersonating Spider-Man while Peter Parker was buried alive — remains one of his most chilling appearances in the comics. The Marvel Comics Retro format renders him in the classic flat-colour comic aesthetic of the Silver Age design that defined his earliest appearances.
