Hank McCoy is one of the original five X-Men and one of the most intellectually complex characters in the Marvel roster — a mutant whose physical transformation into a blue-furred, leonine form has always been in tension with his identity as a scientist, philosopher, and Avenger. The Astonishing X-Men era, defined by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's celebrated run, put Beast at the centre of one of the line's most significant storylines: the development of a so-called mutant cure, which forced Hank to confront what it would mean to choose to be human again. That storyline cut to the heart of what the X-Men have always been about, and Beast's role in it — as both the scientist closest to the cure and the mutant most visibly marked by his mutation — gave him more to do than almost any other character in the run.
