Dr. Elias Wirtham became Cardiac after his brother died from a disease that a pharmaceutical company had a cure for — and chose to suppress it for profit. Debuting in Amazing Spider-Man #344 (1991), he built a powered exoskeleton and a beta-particle staff and went to war against corporate corruption, targeting companies that put greed above human life. Spider-Man repeatedly found himself caught between stopping Cardiac and acknowledging that his targets deserved what they got. A morally complex vigilante on a retro cardback — one of the most compelling deep cuts in this wave.
