Nanotyrannus lancensis is one of the most debated dinosaurs in palaeontology — a small tyrannosaur known from a skull discovered in Montana that has been argued over for decades. Some researchers consider it a genuine separate species, a smaller and more agile tyrannosaur that coexisted with T. rex in the Hell Creek Formation. Others argue it's simply a juvenile T. rex, and that what looks like a distinct animal is just an immature specimen of the most famous predator in the fossil record. That debate has never been fully resolved, which makes Nanotyrannus one of the few dinosaurs where the scientific community is still genuinely divided on whether it exists as a species at all.
