Craterosaurus pottonensis is one of the most fragmentary stegosaurians in the fossil record — known from a single partial vertebra discovered in the Potton Sands of Bedfordshire, England, dating to the Early Cretaceous (Hauterivian stage, approximately 130 million years ago). That single bone has made its classification contentious: some palaeontologists consider it a valid stegosaurian genus, others have suggested the specimen may belong to a juvenile of a known species. What is clear is that Craterosaurus represents one of the last stegosaurians — a group that peaked in the Late Jurassic and was in steep decline by the Early Cretaceous when most of its relatives had already disappeared.
