For decades its fossils were assigned to Liliensternus, a better-known early theropod, before a 2007 reanalysis by Ezcurra and Cuny established it as a distinct genus — making it one of the few dinosaurs to have been formally renamed in the 21st century based on a re-examination of existing material rather than new discoveries. It lived right at the Triassic-Jurassic boundary, a period of mass extinction that wiped out most of its contemporaries and cleared the ecological space that allowed dinosaurs to dominate the Jurassic. Lophostropheus was a slender, bipedal predator estimated at around five to six metres, built for pursuit rather than brute force, and its survival across the boundary event makes it palaeontologically significant as a transitional theropod.
